Nestled in the ancient heart of the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei is arguably Namibia’s most iconic and spellbinding destination. This surreal landscape is defined by a colossal, cracked white clay pan encircled by a spectacular sea of apricot-coloured sand dunes—some towering an incredible 300 metres high. The absolute best time to experience this natural wonder is at sunrise or sunset. As the sun crests the horizon, it ignites the ridges into a fiery orange, casting long, dramatic shadows that transform the desert into a fascinating, ever-changing theatre of light and colour.
Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by mighty red dunes in the southern region of the Namib Desert, which is considered the oldest desert in the world. Sossusvlei is encompassed in the Namib-Naukluft National Park which features high, isolated inselbergs and bright orange sand dunes. Some dunes rise to almost 400 metres, making them the tallest dunes in the world. Sossusvlei’s dunes bring a close to the Tsauchab River which, over time, has shaped the pan into a roughly elliptical shape. Visitors are also drawn to the Sesriem Gate, which is the main access point to the Sossusvlei area of the Namib-Naukluft National Park.
