Samburu, north of Shaba and Meru, is one of the lesser-known parks, allowing you an uncrowded safari in a breathtaking area brimming with wildlife. The reserve is famous for the Samburu Five—the beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, and gerenuk. Buffalo Springs, named after its crystal-clear springs, offers a similarly private experience. Visitors are likely to spot elephants, zebras, and a variety of bird species against the backdrop of a semi-arid landscape.
On the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river, Samburu National Park is home to a huge volume of wildlife, such as herds of elephants and giraffes, as well Grevy’s zebra, and lesser known species such as the Somali Ostrich. Other inhabitants include lions, leopards and cheetahs, who spend their days hunting the large populations of gazelles, impalas and warthogs, amongst other prey. Samburu has a large number of hippos, as well as olive baboons, hyenas, buffalo and jackals to name a few. Samburu is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with more than 450 species of birds to spot.
