Mikumi Wildlife Lodge

Set deep in Mikumi National Park's Kikobonga Area, Mikumi Wildlife Lodge looks out over a waterhole where elephants drift in at dusk and the long grass shifts with antelope, zebra and the occasional lion on the prowl.

The lodge offers an unhurried base from which to explore one of Tanzania's most rewarding wildlife regions. It sits low in the landscape of Mikumi National Park, Tanzania's fourth-largest protected area and a vital wildlife corridor linking north to the vast Nyerere National Park, a route used by elephants, buffalo and predators moving between two of East Africa's great wilderness landscapes. The region is ideal for spotting large herds of elephants, giraffes, buffalo and predators such as lions and hyenas. Tanzania's famous tree-climbing lions are also sometimes seen in this area. The whole landscape has the majestic backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains making for scenic photography. The area is also a birdwatcher's dream with over 400 recorded species. For the energetic, there are also several hiking trails to explore in and around the Mikumi region, many with waterfalls to see. Days here can be as full or as slow as you choose. Game drives run morning, afternoon and after dark, and guided walking safaris bring the bush closer. Further afield, there are nature walks and trips out to local waterfalls and nearby towns. Back at the Lodge, cooking demonstrations with the chef, Swahili lessons and sundowners by the pool fill the quieter hours. Private dining under the stars and sundowners by the pool round out the day. The lodge is only a 20 minute drive from the Kikoboga Airstrip which is only a 60 minute flight from Zanzibar, or 2 hour's drive from the SGR Station.

All 48 rooms face the waterhole and the plains beyond, so the wildlife-watching rarely pauses, you can even spot animals from your own room, or from the Lodge's communal spaces.
